AWAY FROM HER Canada 2007 110 mins Fiona
(Julie Christie) and Grant have been married for over 40 years. Now they
are forced to face the fact that Fiona's "forgetfulness" is
Alzheimer's. After Fiona wanders away and is found after being lost, thy
agree she must go into a nursing home. The nursing home has a
"no-visitors" policy for the first 30 days of a patient's
stay, so they can adjust to their new surroundings. When Grant
eventually visits Fiona, he is devastated to find out that not only has
she seemingly forgotten him, she has transferred her affections to
another man- Aubrey, a wheel chair-bound mute who is also a patient ant
the nursing home. As the distance between husband and wife grows, Grant
must draw upon his love for Fiona to perform an act of self-sacrifice in
order to ensure her happiness. |

Thursday 13th December 2007 7.30 pm BABETTE'S FEAST Denmark 1988 102 mins In
19th century Denmark, two adult sisters live in an isolated village with
their father, who is the pastor of a small Protestant church. Although
presented with an opportunity to leave the village, the sisters choose
to stay with their father, to serve him and their church. After some
years, a French woman refugee, Babette, arrives at their door, begs them
to take her in, and commits herself to work for them as
maid/housekeeper/cook. After their father dies, the sisters decide to
hold a dinner to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his birth. Babette
experiences unexpected good fortune and implores the sisters to allow
her to take charge of the preparation of the meal. Babette then prepares
the feast of a lifetime for the members of the tiny church. |
